Product Description
Denatonium, commonly available as denatonium benzoate and denatonium saccharate, is the most bitter compound known and has a bitter taste. The threshold is 0.05 ppm for benzoates and 0.01 ppm for sugars. [1] It was discovered in 1958 by MacFarlan Smith of Edinburgh, Scotland, while researching local anesthetics and is registered as a Bitrex trademark.
Dilutions as low as 10 ppm are unbearably bitter for most people. Denatonium salt is usually a colorless, odorless solid, but is usually traded as a solution. They are used as aversive agents (bittering agents) to prevent inappropriate ingestion. Denatonium is used in denatured alcohol, antifreeze, nail biting prevention preparations, respiratory mask fit testing, animal repellants, liquid soap, shampoo, and Nintendo Switch game cards to prevent accidental swallowing or choking by children.
