Dimethyl sulfoxide is a sulfur-containing organic compound with the molecular formula C2H6OS. It is a colorless and odorless transparent liquid at room temperature, and is a hygroscopic flammable liquid. It has the characteristics of high polarity, high boiling point, good thermal stability, non proton, and water solubility. It can dissolve in most organic compounds such as ethanol, propanol, benzene, and chloroform, and is known as the "universal solvent". Heating in the presence of acid will produce small amounts of compounds such as methyl mercaptan, formaldehyde, dimethyl sulfide, and methanesulfonic acid. It decomposes at high temperatures and reacts violently with chlorine, emitting a light blue flame when burned in air. Can be used as organic solvents, reaction media, and organic synthesis intermediates. It can also be used as a dyeing solvent, dye remover, dyeing carrier, and absorbent for recovering acetylene and sulfur dioxide in synthetic fibers.
