Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), is a white crystalline powder with weak acidity. As a hexadentate ligand containing four carboxyl groups and two amine groups, EDTA demonstrates exceptional metal-chelating capabilities. It exhibits low solubility in cold water (0.5 g/L at 20°C) but significantly higher solubility in alkaline solutions. The compound shows limited solubility in common organic solvents while maintaining stability under routine storage conditions.

EDTA's unique molecular structure enables the formation of stable coordination compounds with most di- and trivalent metal ions through six binding sites. This chelation mechanism allows effective sequestration of metal ions even in trace concentrations.
