Uses
Medical Field: It can be used as a sedative and mild hypnotic in medicine, with a weak diuretic effect. It is also used as a cosolvent. For example, quinine urethane injection for the treatment of varicose veins contains ethyl carbamate. It is also used to treat chronic myeloid leukemia, multiple myeloma, etc.
Pesticide Field: It can be used as an intermediate in pesticide synthesis, such as for the synthesis of triazine herbicides, triadimefon fungicides, etc.
Chemical Industry Field: It is an important raw material in chemical production and can be used to synthesize isocyanates, non - toxic polyurethanes, melamine derivatives, polyacetamides, etc. It is also used to synthesize heterocyclic compounds such as pyrroles, triazoles, and triazines.
Other Fields: It can be used as an intermediate in perfume synthesis, a coloring agent for printing and dyeing, and a reagent for biochemical research.
Preparation Methods
Phosgene Method: Phosgene reacts with ethanol to form ethyl chloroformate, which is then ammonolyzed to obtain the product.
Nitric Acid - Urea Method: Nitric acid reacts with urea to form urea nitrate. Then, ethanol and sodium nitrite are added, and in the presence of sulfuric acid, an esterification reaction occurs to form urethane and sodium nitrate. The reaction product is filtered to remove sodium nitrate, and then distilled, crystallized, and dried to obtain the finished product.

Safety Precautions
Toxicity: It has a potential carcinogenic effect. On October 27, 2017, the International Agency for Research on Cancer of the World Health Organization released the preliminary list of carcinogens for reference. Ethyl carbamate (urethane) is in the list of category 2A carcinogens.
Storage: Store in a sealed container in a cool, ventilated warehouse, away from fire and heat sources. It should be stored separately from oxidants, acids, bases, etc., and avoid mixed storage.
