Dimethyl sulfoxide (abbreviated as DMSO) is a sulfur-containing organic compound. Its English name is Dimethyl sulfoxide, and its molecular formula is (CH3)2SO. At room temperature, it is a colorless and odorless transparent liquid with hygroscopic and flammable properties. It has high polarity, high boiling point, non-protic characteristics, and is miscible with water. It has extremely low toxicity, good thermal stability, does not mix with alkanes, and can dissolve in most organic substances such as water, ethanol, propanol, ethyl ether, benzene, and chloroform, and is thus known as the "universal solvent".

3. Used as analytical reagent and gas chromatographic stationary liquid, and also used as solvent  during uv spectrum analysis.
