Dimethylsulfoxide (abbreviated as DMSO) is a sulfur-containing organic compound, with the English name Dimethylsulfoxide and the molecular formula (CH3)2SO. At room temperature, it is a colorless, odorless, transparent liquid with hygroscopicity and is flammable. It has the characteristics of high polarity, high boiling point, non-protonic, and miscibility in water. It has extremely low toxicity, good thermal stability, does not mix with alkanes, and is soluble in most organic substances such as water, ethanol, propanol, ether, benzene and chloroform. It is hailed as a "universal solvent". It is the one with the strongest dissolving power among the commonly used organic solvents. It can dissolve most organic substances, including carbohydrates, polymers, peptides, as well as many inorganic salts and gases.
 

----DMSO is used for bladderinflammation (interstitial cystitis), limb pain that usually occurs after an injury (complex regional pain syndrome), and leakage of intravenous (IV) from the vein into surrounding skin and tissue (extravasation).
----Used for aromatic extraction, resin and dye reaction medium, acrylic polymerization, wire drawing solvent, etc.
----Can be used as organic solvent, reaction medium and organic synthesis intermediates. Extremely versatile.
----Used as an analytical reagent and a stationary solution for gas chromatography, also used as a solvent in ultraviolet spectrum analysis.
---- Use for antifreezing agent.
----DMSO is also a osmotic protective agent that can reduce the freezing point of cells, reduce the formation of ice crystals, the damage of free radicals to cells, and change the permeability of biofilms to electrolytes, poisons and metabolites.
