3-(4-Hydroxyphenyl)propionic acid is White to light yellow crystals. It is difficult to dissolve in benzene and chloroform but soluble in ethanol, ether, ethyl acetate and hot water. The ortho position shows color when encountering ferric trichloride, while the para position does not.
