Introduction:
Nitrogen heterocyclic compound pyrazine is a volatile nitrogen heterocyclic compound, belonging to one of the six-membered heterocyclic azine containing two nitrogen atoms. It is isomeric with pyridazine and pyrimidine. It is also called 1,4-diazine and p-diazine. It is precipitated from water as colorless prismatic crystals. It has a floral odor. It can evaporate with water vapor. Relative molecular weight 80.09. Relative density 1.0311 (61ºC). Melting point 54ºC. Boiling point 115~116ºC (Chemicalbook102.391×103Pa). Flash point 55ºC. Refractive index 1.4953 (61ºC). It is soluble  easily soluble in water, ethanol and ether. It is weakly alkaline. It is not easy to undergo electrophilic substitution reaction, but its chemical activity to nucleophilic reagents is stronger than that of pyridazine and pyrimidine. The hydrogen on the carbon atom can be replaced by methyl or halogen. It can react with alkyl halides to form quaternary ammonium salts.
