Dimethyl malonate is a colorless, transparent liquid with a typical ester-like aroma.

It is volatile at room temperature, with a boiling point of approximately 181-183°C, a melting point of about -62°C, a relative density of 1.154 (at 20°C), and a refractive index of 1.4135 (at 20°C).

It is easily soluble in organic solvents and slightly soluble in water. Chemically, it exhibits general ester properties and can undergo hydrolysis under acid or base catalysis.   It is relatively stable at room temperature but may decompose when exposed to strong oxidants or high temperatures.
