The chemical composition of 1074 steel typically includes:

The high carbon content gives 1074 steel its characteristic hardness and strength, while manganese enhances its toughness and hardenability.
Mechanical Properties
The mechanical properties of 1074 steel depend on factors such as heat treatment, processing, and alloying elements. However, typical mechanical properties for 1074 steel in the annealed or normalized condition are:

Weldability: Fair weldability when properly preheated and welded, requiring post-weld heat treatment.

Corrosion Resistance: Susceptible to rusting and corrosion; requires surface protection in corrosive environments.

Formability: Can be cold worked and formed using conventional processes such as bending and stamping.
Heat Treatment
1074 steel can be heat treated to achieve desired mechanical properties. Common heat treatment processes include:

Annealing: Heating the steel to around 800°C (1470°F) and slow cooling in the furnace to relieve internal stresses and improve machinability.

Normalizing: Heating the steel to around 870°C (1600°F) and air cooling to refine the grain structure and improve mechanical properties.

Quenching and Tempering: Heating the steel to around 820°C (1500°F), quenching in oil or water, and then tempering at a specific temperature to achieve the desired combination of hardness and toughness.
Surface Finish
