    Zinc pyrithione is a compound with multiple functions. It is a white to yellow crystalline powder at room temperature with a slight characteristic odor and is insoluble in water. Zinc pyrithione forms an insoluble precipitate with cationic and non-ionic surfactants, which is unstable to light and oxidants, and unstable to acids and alkalis at higher temperatures. It is incompatible with EDTA, and non-ionic surfactants will partially inactivate it. Its main functions include antibacterial, antifungal and antiseptic effects.

  • Powerful antifungal and antibacterial activity : Effectively inhibits the growth of fungi (e.g.,  Malassezia ) and certain bacteria by disrupting microbial cell membranes and preventing reproduction. It is particularly potent against fungi that cause dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis.
  • Anti-inflammatory and antipruritic effects : Reduces skin inflammation caused by microbial overgrowth, alleviating symptoms such as itching, redness, and swelling.

 

Application

 
 
1.In medical
Zinc pyrithione is best known for its use in treating dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis. It also has antibacterial properties and is effective against many pathogens from the Streptococcus and Staphylococcus genera. Its other medical applications include treatments of psoriasis, eczema, ringworm, fungus, athletes foot, dry skin,atopic dermatitis, tinea, and vitiligo.

2.In paint
Due to its low solubility in water (8 ppm at neutral pH), zinc pyrithione is suitable for use in outdoor paintsand other products that provide protection against mildew and algae. It is an effective algaecide. It is chemically incompatible with paints relying on metal carboxylate curing agents. When used in latex paints with water containing high amount of iron, a sequestering agent that will preferentially bind the iron ions is needed. Its decomposition by ultraviolet light is slow, providing years of protection even against direct sunlight.

3.In sponges
Zinc pyrithione is also used as an antibacterial treatment for household sponges.
