Colorless to slightly yellow transparent liquid. It has the fragrance of vanillin and coconut and a warm, sweet herbal flavor. Boiling point is 207ºC, flash point is 96.1ºC, and crystallization point is -37ºC. The pH value of the anhydrous substance is 7.0; the pH value of a 10% distilled aqueous solution is 4.2. It is miscible in water and most organic solvents, resins, waxes, etc., and insoluble in anhydrous glycerin, gum arabic, casein, soy protein, etc.

γ-Valerolactone has strong reactivity and can be used as a resin solvent and an intermediate for various related compounds. It is also used as a lubricant, plasticizer, gelling agent for nonionic surfactants, and lactone additive for leaded gasoline. It is used for the dyeing of cellulose esters and synthetic fibers. γ-Valerolactone has the fragrance of vanillin and coconut. According to China's GB2760-86, it is a permitted edible flavor. It is mainly used to prepare flavors of peach, coconut, vanilla and other types.
