Heat Treatment of M48 High-Speed Steel

Process Temperature Procedure Hardness
Soft Annealing 800-860°C Heat to the specified temperature and cool slowly in the furnace. Max Brinell 300
Stress Relieving 600-650°C Heat for 1 hour, then air cool to remove machining stresses. Reduces distortion
Hardening 1200-1230°C Heat to the specified temperature, followed by oil, air quenching, or a warm bath at 540°C. 64-66 HRC
Tempering 540-570°C Temper at the specified temperature for at least two cycles. 64-67 HRC
