ESR M7/1.3348 High Speed Tool Steel

M7 high-speed steel is a type of tool steel known for its high toughness and wear resistance. It is composed of a combination of tungsten, molybdenum, and high levels of carbon and chromium. M7 steel has a Rockwell hardness of 62-63, making it ideal for cutting tools such as drills, saw blades, and milling cutters. It is also used in the production of parts that require high strength and durability, such as aerospace components and automobile transmissions .

Heat Treatment for ESR M7 / 1.3348 High-Speed Tool Steel

Annealing:

  • Procedure: Heat to 850-900°C, hold for a sufficient time, then cool slowly in the furnace to approximately 500°C, followed by air cooling.

  • Annealed Hardness: ≤ 255 HB.

Hardening:

  • Preheating: Preheat in two stages at 600-850°C.

  • Hardening Temperature: Heat rapidly to 1190-1220°C. Hold at the hardening temperature until fully heated through.

  • Quenching: Quench in oil or salt bath at 540-595°C, or allow air cooling.

Tempering:

  • Procedure: Temper immediately after hardening. The recommended tempering temperature is 550°C. It is advised to temper twice or thrice to achieve optimum hardness and toughness.

  • Final Hardness after Tempering: 64-66 HRC.
