Diethyl malonate is a colorless, transparent liquid with a mild ester-like aroma.

It has a boiling point of approximately 199°C, a melting point of about -50°C, a relative density of around 1.055 (at 20°C), and a refractive index of roughly 1.4135.

It is easily soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and ether, and slightly soluble in water. Chemically, it exhibits general ester properties and can undergo hydrolysis under acid or base catalysis. It is relatively stable at room temperature but may decompose when exposed to strong oxidants or high temperatures.
